Crítica -De una pianista a un pianista

La experiencia de traer a un amigo desde lejos, en este caso desde Boston, un músico de cualidades especiales, con repertorio absolutamente propio, a una serie que había estado soñando desde hacía muchos años, es una responsabilidad cuando uno lo que es es concertista de piano, no empresario! pero así se realizan los sueños, con un poco de magia, mucho empeño de parte y parte y un toquecito del sentido de la aventura, cosa que no nos es extraña a nosotros los músicos, cada concierto es un camino a lo desconocido así nos conozcamos de memoria lo que vamos a tocar y en el caso de Leo aún más porque el se mete por unos caminos, anda un buen trecho a sus anchas y luego regresa como si nada a la recapitulación

Leo Blanco me dice un día que viene al Reino Unido en Junio y yo inmediatamente pienso, tengo que hacer un festival, él me dice que muy bien le hubiera podido decir “muy bien vale, nos tomamos un café juntos cuando vengas”  pero era mas emocionante hacer que tocara un concierto, claro. Para eso tenía que organizar más de uno, se veía mejor, pensé. Entonces empecé a invitar a otros amigos y de repente tenía a 10 personas que venían de cinco países a tocar en Londres.
Todo llega, y el 20 de Junio nos encontramos en el Bolivar Hall, Leo Blanco al piano, yo en primera fila.
El bello ser humano que es Leo Blanco se transfroma en música, lo que respira, vive, sueña, oye interiormente, su humanidad es sonora. Leo se divierte, se delumbra a veces él mismo con sus invenciones, casi como le pasaba a Liszt. Con sus ojos cerrados, él deja que sus grandes manos vayan por si solas al encuentro de las teclas precisas. Su ritmo y su pulso de acero son su columna vertebral y su torrente sanguíneo. Así pasó una hora y media tocando sus temas, trasnformádolos a su antojo y los escuchas, siguiéndole en su andar y desandar, como ya lo dijo alguien antes, hipnotizados.
No sé, al final de todo, si es jazz, no creo que sea solo jazz, tiene el calor de Caraballeda, un poco del aturdimiento latino, venezolano, un poco de caos, fuerza, mucha fuerza. Yo digo que es torrente tropical en las teclas.

Siempre he sido apasionada, solo que con el tiempo, la pasión va poquito a poco cambiando, se torna mas aventurada, mas atrevida. Tengo la certeza de que hay que creer cien por cien en lo que uno quiere hacer. ¿Qué es lo que quiero hacer mas que nada en la vida? Comunicar la música, el deseo es el de compartir música que amo, los vericuetos del alma hechos sonidos. La música es muy difícil de explicar con palabras el público debe saber que lo mejor es siempre oirla, leer sobre música es iluminador pero no reemplaza NUNCA la experiencia de los sonidos hilados por el pensamiento y la sensibilidad de los músicos.

Me he entrenado siempre como intérprete, me gusta el trabajo de perfeccionar las frases musicales que toco, que todo esté balanceado, cada nota lleva un peso, tiene su lugar específico en el contexto  de esas melodías, luego está el equilibrio entre las manos, que el bajo no sobrepase el registro mas agudo, que no sea pesado a menos que se requiera, después están los diferentes estilos de música que toco. Barroca, Clásica, Romántica, Contemporánea, Impresionista y cada uno de los estilos de las danzas de latinoamérica! Ha sido todo una revelación para mi como músico clásico adentrarme en los géneros diversísimos de nuestro amado continente, la riqueza de nuestros rítmos es tan grande, la belleza  y sensibilidad de nuestros creadores es deslumbrante.

Vivir en Londres ha significado la intensificación de mis sentimientos por mi país y por el resto de Latinoamérica, eso me llena de orgullo y me hace lo que soy hoy por hoy, es una parte importante de mi expresión como músico que es a la vez la de un propagador de esas semillas sembradas por nuestros ancestros y contemporáneos.

Nací en Caracas, esa capital de un país hermoso, lleno de contrastes climáticos y de gente alegre, abierta, generosa y simpática! Mi padre fue un escritor polémico en su época, Argenis Rodríguez, era tajante en sus opiniones políticas, tuvo una vida dedicada a la literatura pero fue una vida muy dura. Mi madre, Julieta, me inició en la música, me enseñó a leer las notas, ella había estudiado piano con Moisés Moleiro en su juventud pero tuvo que dejarlo porque le dio fiebre reumática, lo cierto es que ella se dedicó a llevarme a la escuela de música luego al conservatorio Juan José Landaeta, que nos quedaba al lado opuesto de la ciudad, ¡ pasábamos horas en el tráfico! En Venezuela se va a la escuela de música o al conservatorio después de las clases en la escuela, por lo general en las tardes/noches. Mi tiempo en el conservatorio fue delicioso, era una casa muy grande con jardines tropicales preciosos y suelos de madera pulida (todavía puedo recordar el aroma) y mas importante que nada, el cariño, dedicación y la altísima calidad de todos los profesores que tuve allí, sin olvidar el trabajo constante, duro y disciplinado con el  que tuve que responder! De niña y adolescente recuerdo a mis amigas y primos jugando en el jardín en Agosto por ejemplo y yo practicando alguna sonata de Beethoven o Bach que había que aprenderse para Septiembre. A los 16 años los directores del Royal College of Music de Londres fueron a Caracas a hacer pruebas para dar cinco becas, me presenté al concurso, recuerdo que toqué el Estudio Op.10 No1 de Chopin (una obra muy difícil) entre otras, hubo pruebas de teoría y lectura a primera vista. Gané una de esas becas y a los dos meses me encontré aquí. ¡Qué shock! ¡El frío!!!! nunca había experimentado algo así mas el no hablar inglés me hacía sentir en otro planeta. Debo decir que los ingleses me acogieron con mucha calidez, había también venezolanos que se preocupaban por mí. Tuve una profesora, Phyllis Sellick, quien me dio con toda la generosidad del mundo todo lo que ella sabía sobre el ARTE de tocar el piano. Ella era el lazo entre los románticos y los contemporáneos, lo que me hace ser alumna de Chopin en cuarta generación y de segunda generación, alumna de Maurice Ravel y de Serge Rachmaninov. Ella vivió hasta los 96 años lo que significa que pude disfrutar mucho de los intercambios pianísticos y  de sus enseñanzas

Hoy en día doy clases en el Royal College of Music después de haber viajado mucho tocando conciertos, lo cual sigo haciendo, pero como tengo un hijo me he dedicado bastante a su crianza. Leonardo es su nombre, nació en Londres, su padre es francés, estudia en el Liceo Francés de Londres y es a la vez muy venezolano, es hincha de la Vino Tinto y de Arsenal.

Decidí organizar la serie de conciertos en el Bolívar Hall porque adoro ese espacio venezolano en el centro de ésta ciudad, casa donde nuestro Francisco de  Miranda vivió con su esposa inglesa y nació su hijo, Leandro, donde Simón Bolívar y Andrés Bello se reunireron a planear la independencia de nuestro continente. Hay tanta historia en esas paredes. Mi historia con el Bolívar Hall se remonta a cuando hice el primer concierto de piano que se realizó allí y luego trabajé intensamente en la consecución del piano Steinway que tenemos allí desde hace como 20 años.

Era un sueño que tenía desde hace varios años: presentar talento venezolano en forma de festival. En lo que va de los conciertos, los mienbros del público han podido apreciar las muchas, variadas, formas en las que se puede utilizar el piano. Cómo los pianistas venezolanos hacen de ese instrumento, inventado por Cristófori, un medio de expresión propio. Al final de la serie habremos tocado una veintena de obras venezolanas de los siglos 19, 20 y 21, incluyendo el gran concierto que dio anoche el compositor y pianista Leo Blanco quien interpretó e improvisó durante una hora y media seguidas su torrencial música de fuerza tropical.

Ahora estamos preparando el último concierto de la serie que he organizado, “¡De Argentina a Puerto Rico!” el cual será un viaje musical lleno de luz en el cual,  el piano, la flauta, un cuatro, una mandolina, un contrabajo y mucha percusión juntos entrelazarán la nostalgia propia de los tangos y valses argentinos  con la alegría de los joropos y merengues venezolanos, los sincopados ritmos de la música caribeña de países como Cuba, Puerto Rico y Haití, sin olvidar la cadencia suave del pasillo y el bambuco de Colombia. 

Cada concierto es único, irremplazamble e irrepetible. Para éste, mis amigos, el insigne flautista Efraín Oscher, el contrabajista Gabriel León, Cristóbal Soto maestro de la mandolina y el cuatro y Wilmer Sifontes en la percusión junto a mi piano, afreceremos al público de ésta gran ciudad,  piezas tales como Adiós Nonino de Astor Piazzolla, A fuego lento de Horacio Salgán, Oriente es de otro color de Henry Martínez, el famoso Joropo de Moisés Moleiro y Capullito de Alelí de Rafael Hernández por sólo nombrar algunos de los sugestivos títulos de los números a interpretar la noche del Lunes 1 de Julio.

From Argentina to Puerto Rico!! will be a musical journey of merengues, tangos, waltzes and joropos from many Latin American countries. It promises to be a feast of  ebullient and exciting dances that will enthral audiences of all ages.

A quintet formed by Clara Rodríguez (piano), Efraín Oscher (flute), Gabriel León (double bass) Cristóbal Soto (mandolin, cuatro and guitar) and Wilmer Sifontes (percussion) will recreate the colours, rhythms, nostalgia and happiness of the whole of South America.

Clara Rodriguez is one of the most distinguished of the present generation of international artists and has often been described as an Ambassador of her homeland music. Her programmes have consistently contrasted traditional classical music with the output of South American composers.

Since coming to London at the age of 16, to study at the Royal College of Music with Phyllis Sellick, she has performed extensively as a soloist at Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre, St John’s Smith Square and Saint Martin-In-The-Fields as well as touring in Europe, India, Egypt, North Africa and South America.

She has commissioned and premièred many works including Federico Ruiz’s Second Piano Concerto which she recorded with the Orquesta Municipal de Caracas.

Clara Rodriguez founded and directed the San Martin Music Festival of Caracas from 1993 to 1997.

She has recorded and produced CDs of works by Frédéric Chopin, Moisés Moleiro, Federico Ruiz, Teresa Carreño, and Ernesto Lecuona. Her latest productions are Venezuela for the Nimbus label and El Cuarteto y Clara Rodriguez en vivo– Caracas. They are consistently played on BBC Radio 3 and networks worldwide.

Flutist Efrain Oscher was born in Uruguay and was raised in Venezuela where he began to learn the flute in “El Sistema” organization aged 18. At the age of 25 he became principal flute of the Valencia Municipal Orchestra.
In 2003 he finished with Merit a postgraduate course at the Royal Academy of Music under the legendary British flautist William Bennett.
While in England, Efrain appeared at the Bath International Festival and the English Chamber Orchestra Young Artist Series.
He currently lives in Germany and leads the Bolivar Soloists with whom he recorded for the Deutsche Grammophon the CD ¡México!  with tenor Rolando Villazon, followed by Mexican and European tours.
Efrain is also in much demand as a composer and arranger. His works have been
performed and recorded across Europe and Venezuela by Edicson Ruiz, Pacho Flores, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper.

Cristóbal Soto was born in Paris and was initiated in Venezuelan traditional music by his family. A self-taught composer, cuatrist, guitarist and mandolin player, he settled in Venezuela between 1974 and 1996, there he founded several groups of instrumental Venezuelan music including Ensamble Gurrufío, Recoveco, Cañón contigo as well as “La Clavija”, a school of traditional and folk music. He has also performed with famous Venezuelan singers such as Simón Díaz, Maria Teresa Chacín and Serenata Guayanesa amongst many others.

From a waltz to a merengue, from a polka to a contra-dance or a joropo, Cristóbal Soto seems to keep pushing back the boundaries of the mandolin, making us discover, through his numerous recordings and concerts, the richness of Venezuelan music. Cristóbal Soto has created ensembles in Paris where he now lives: “Fanfare La Tina”, “Venezuela Crónica” and “La Papayera”. He also teaches and writes articles on Venezuelan and Latin American music.

 

Gabriel León was born in Caracas into a family with a long history of bass players. He trained at the Simón Bolívar Conservatory, entered the Orquesta Sinfónica Venezuela at the very early age of 17 and at 19 won a scholarship to study at the Reyna Sofia Conservatorio of Madrid with Rainer Zepperitz and Antonio Garcia Araque. He has been invited to play and tour with orchestras such as the Gustav Mahler Jungend Orchester under Claudio Abbado. He has also played chamber music concerts with members of the Berlin Philharmonic and as a soloist with Venezuelan orchestras.

His multifaceted talent stretches from the Baroque period to funk and rock music. In Bilbao, Spain; he has created several bands, Descenso, Luis Azul and El Exceceso and has just produced his first pop CD. In Classical music he has participated in productions for labels such as SONY, Deutsche Grammophon (¡México!) and EMI.

He is a member of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra since 2002.

London based Wilmer Sifontes is a renowned Venezuelan percussionist who specializes in traditional Venezuelan music and salsa. He has been living in London since 1996 where he has founded the salsa band Conjunto Sabroso and the ensemble ‘Afro-American Project’. With his salsa band he has backed international stars such as Adalberto Santiago (Fania), Maelo Ruiz and Willie Gonzalez. He has played in prestigious international festivals such as: WOMAD, Rhythm Sticks, the North Sea Jazz, Beijing International Festival ,La Linea, Kijani Kenya Festival, Interfolk Festival (Spain), VI Festival de Música Ximena de La Frontera (Spain 2006-2010), He also featured as guest percussionist with the Scottish International band Salsa Celtica in two world tours.

“London-based Venezuelan pianist Clara Rodriguez and friends brought the heady and exotic rhythms and sounds of South America to a windy Southbank in a delightfully relaxed concert of chamber music at the Purcell Room.

Clara opened the concert with a passionate and dramatic performance of Heitor Villa-Lobos’ ‘Impressoes seresteira’ (Impressions of a serenade musician), the second movement of his Ciclo Brasileiro , and a piece which suggests a “latin Rachmaninov” with its sweeping climaxes and soulful melodies. Afterwards, the friends, all fellow Venezuelans, joined Clara on the stage – flautist Efrain Oscher, guitarist Christobal Soto, bass player Gabriel Leon, and percussionist Wilmer Sifontes – and Clara explained that the pieces to be performed would take us on a musical journey “from Cuba to Argentina”. With evocative titles such as ‘A fuego lento’, ‘Mananita pueblerina’, ‘O voo mosca’ (“the flying fly”), and ‘Romance de Barrio’, and emcompassing genres such as Samba, Tango and Merengue, the music was by turns lively and foot-tapping, lilting and dancing, plaintive and haunting, humorous and witty, earthy and energetic. As the musicians, clearly good friends and music partners, settled into the performance, there was a wonderful sense of a shared experience: this was music for friends, performed by friends, amongst friends. The audience responded with enthusiasm, cheering and whistling, clapping loudly after each piece.

From the tragic Argentinian samba ‘Alfonsina y el mar’ (Ariel Ramirez), a tribute to Alfonsina Stormi, who committed suicide in 1938 by jumping into the Mar del Plata, through a spirited ‘Joropo’ (a Venezuelan folk waltz) by Moises Moleiro, ‘Caramba’, a tender and emotional “protest song” by a jilted lover, to Piazzola’s iconic piano tango ‘Adios Nonino’, written as a tribute to his dead grandfather, and a rousing and entertaining closing number ‘Capullito de Aleli’, by Puerto Rican Rafael Hernandez, the music, beautifully and expressively played, vividly brought to life the colours, sights and sounds of South America. At times, we could easily have been enjoying a chilled mint tea in a café in Havana in the 1930s, taking in the potent and emotionally charged atmosphere of a Buenos Aires tango bar, or enjoying a lazy Caipirinha overlooking the beach at Rio. Infectious syncopated rhythms from the percussion, the haunting strains of the flute, the flamenco-like strum of the guitar or mandolin, an elegant and vibrant piano, which, despite being a full-size concert Steinway, never dominated, this was music to savour – smoky and sensual, excitable, racy, heartfelt, hypnotic, buoyant and vibrant. For a few hours, at least, it was as if we were all on holiday together”

Leo Blanco is a Venezuelan pianist, arranger and composer. Leo grew up in Mérida-Venezuela, where from early age he was surrounded by Venezuelan folklore – a blend of African and European musical traditions– as well as jazz, classical music and pop. At the age of 11 he already was a member of the Mérida Youth Symphony Orchestra.

 

After moving to Caracas at the age of 16 he performed and recorded with his own Jazz trio, while studying Improvisation, jazz harmony and piano at the musical Institute “Ars Nova” and University of Musical Studies. Soon he started working with very well-known jazz and Latin pop national artists. There, he shared the stage with major international jazz artist such as Terence Blanchard, Danilo Perez, Pat Metheny, Chucho Valdez (Irakere), Joao Bosco, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba.

 

His interest in world music and jazz took him to Boston in 1996, where he obtained a full scholarship to study composition and improvisation in both Berklee and then New England Conservatory.  In March 1996, Leo was the first Latin American to win the prestigious “Boston Jazz Society Award”, and in May of the same year, he received the Billboard Grant Award for his “talent, commitment, achievement and other attributes indicating that he is likely to make a significant contribution to society through music. He was also commissioned to write a new piece “End of the Amazonia”  for the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra

 

He has played with highly acclaimed artists such as Dave Liebman, George Garzone, Luciana Souza, Bob Moses, Dave Samuels, Jamey Haddad, Antonio Sanchez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Jane Bunnett.

 

In the international arena, Leo has been a guest of renowned World Music and Jazz Festivals, such as Newport Jazz Festival (USA), Monterey Jazz Festival (USA), North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), Edinburgh’s International Festival (Scotland), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Kobe Jazz Festival (Japan), Festival de Música (Brazil), Festival Latino Americano (Italy), Festival Latino (Italy), Festival Tentarera (Germany), Music Festival de Paleo (Switzerland).

 

Blanco’s most recent Album CD is “AFRICA LATINA’ on the European label Ayva with notable musicians like saxophonist Donny McCaslin, drummer Antonio Sánchez and guitarist Lionel Louke, among others. This new recording is “an excursion through the music hinterland of African music influenced on Venezuela, Colombia and Peru.”
